Metamorphosis: Align With Who You Are Becoming
Caterpillars go through five distinct stages throughout their lives as they transform into a butterfly. With each stage, they continue to grow—shedding their outer layer and revealing something new every time. This marvelous little creature becomes larger, more vibrant, developing intricate textures, patterns, and markings as it navigates the world one twig at a time.
Eventually, the caterpillar enters its final stage, forming a chrysalis. After about two weeks of deep transformation, it emerges—completely changed—into a unique butterfly.
But the beginning stages of a caterpillar’s life aren’t always beautiful. It grows through constant shedding, through discomfort, through repeated change.
Much like life.
The beginning of our journeys may not have been glamorous either.
Childhood trauma.
Neglect or abuse.
Insecurities and struggles with self-image.
Financial hardship.
Chronic illness. Stress.
Everyone carries something—and most of us, myself included, have carried several things.
There are moments when we feel like we’ve finally arrived. Like we can finally say, “Yes… this is it.”
And then—life shifts again. A new challenge appears.
But it is often in these very moments that our greatest transformations occur.
So the question becomes: how do we move through these seasons with intention, instead of just holding on and hoping we make it through?
Every stage of the caterpillar’s life is leading to its transformation. Every detail contributes to the butterfly it becomes.
And in the same way—every experience we’ve had, every scar, every belief, every thought—becomes part of our unique design.
When people hear parts of my story, they often ask, “Don’t you wish you could change it?”
The abuse. The neglect. The poverty.
And my answer is always the same:
I can’t even imagine who I would be if those things were different.
There is a strength—a resilience—that was built in me during the hardest seasons of my life. And while I would never wish those experiences on anyone, I also recognize that they shaped me in ways comfort never could.
But here is the beauty in all of it:
What you’ve been through does not have to define you.
You are not limited to your past—you are capable of transformation.
You get to rise, to grow, to lift your own unique wings—the very things that make you you—and learn how to fly.
So How Does This Relate to Coaching?
Transformation doesn’t happen by accident—it happens through alignment.
Alignment with your values.
Alignment with your habits.
Alignment with who you are becoming.
So ask yourself:
What values are most important to me right now?
Do the people around me support or diminish those values?
What lifestyle shifts do I need to make to become the version of myself I envision?
Optional Journaling Prompt
Write about the person you are becoming as if you are already them.
How do they think?
How do they move?
How do they take care of themselves?
Then take one small action today that aligns with that version of you.
Your metamorphosis begins today.
